Our Story

Education Matters grew from a desire to keep the district’s focus on what should always be its top priority: Delivering high-quality schools and transformative growth for all students in West Contra Costa.

WCCUSD has long struggled to provide excellent schools and equitable outcomes for the 30,000 students it serves. In recent years, the district prioritized a massive school construction program and the interests of no-bid contractors over the needs of young people. This diverted the district’s energy and resources away from classrooms, teachers, and students, preventing our schools from thriving. In response, an outspoken and passionate community emerged to demand smart fiscal policy and authentic reform that delivers measurable student success.

In 2014, Education Matters began to strengthen this community-driven effort to improve public education. Founded by longtime local residents Susan and Steve Chamberlin, Education Matters launched to promote a renewed focus on student academic growth and achievement.

Today, Education Matters continues to advance a students-first advocacy effort in West Contra Costa. The non-profit organization works to ensure that the district approves expenditures responsibly, shares resources equitably, and supports board leaders who relentlessly advance teacher retention, parent empowerment, and above all, student achievement.
